My hair journey, in 12 pics

So, back in 2009 I contemplated giving up the creamy crack, the perm, the relaxer. I hadn't seen the actual hair that grows out of my head (more than few inches) in over 20 years. I went back and forth and finally decided to get my hair cut short in Jan 2010 and go from there.
It's been a love affair, getting to know my natural hair. I may straighten it with a flat iron in the future (once or twice) but I love love love my curly hair and have come to appreciate it. These days if I have what I think is a bad hair day, I grab a stretchy hair band and push the hair back into a cute puff and keep going.

Date: 2011-07-20 04:22 am (UTC)The pic taking thing was suggested on one of the hair forums I lurk around on and just like they said, the pics help you see your hair growth.
Thanks!

Date: 2011-07-20 04:43 am (UTC)This last Christmas I made a rich, fluffy white hand cream that moisturizes deeply but soaks in quickly without leaving a greasy feel for the ladies at work. It uses only coconut oil, water, baking soda and stearic acid or stearine (found in hobby stores with the candle making supplies). It takes maybe 10 minutes to make, costs pennies and makes a nice large batch. If you want the recipe just let me know. It's actually quite suitable for use in hair, too.

Date: 2011-07-19 12:35 am (UTC)And it looks awesome on you!
My hair currently resembles your Nov/Dec 2010 pics. It's been around 1-3 inches long my entire life because every time I try to grow it out, I give up around the 6-7 inch mark when it's still insisting on being an afro and not falling at all. And yet every few years I give it another go. Like, for example, now. Right now I'm up to about 4 inches when pulled straight and I'm determined to power through (stretchy hair bands + puff at the back is definitely a life saver at this stage). I hope mine looks as cute as yours once it's long enough to do anything other than stick straight out!

Date: 2011-07-20 04:30 am (UTC)And thank you. I didn't expect it to grow so much but i've learned a lot and love it.
Yay on you growing it out! One of the main sites I go to is Curlynikki.com and there's a new site called natural sunshine that's kind of like facebook but about natural hair. Sites, board, pics of others really helped me and still do.

Date: 2011-07-21 03:51 am (UTC)I've always been completely intrigued by the various types of locs, but I suspect that my hair wouldn't hold them. Alas.
