So, back in 2009 I contemplated giving up the creamy crack, the perm, the relaxer. I hadn't seen the actual hair that grows out of my head (more than few inches) in over 20 years. I went back and forth and finally decided to get my hair cut short in Jan 2010 and go from there.

It's been a love affair, getting to know my natural hair. I may straighten it with a flat iron in the future (once or twice) but I love love love my curly hair and have come to appreciate it. These days if I have what I think is a bad hair day, I grab a stretchy hair band and push the hair back into a cute puff and keep going.

These are so awesome. I wish I had something like this. Only I never do anything with my hair. I guess back in school when I was coloring it.

Anyway. Very cool, mama!

How did you ever have the presence of mind to start taking pictures from the very beginning? That's so cool! I did lol at your 'orange was a little unexpected' but damn, it looks good. And it's so long now! Sassy!

I love your icon with his mouth hanging open just a little. Rowr.

The pic taking thing was suggested on one of the hair forums I lurk around on and just like they said, the pics help you see your hair growth.

Thanks!

Thank you! I try to keep all the fuss down to a minimum and try and not go all product junkie. I do find it amusing that so many things that are in the kitchen can go in my hair like mayo, yogurt, olive oil, avacados, bananas, eggs, honey, coconut oil.

I love coconut oil! You can cook with it or wear it. *G*

This last Christmas I made a rich, fluffy white hand cream that moisturizes deeply but soaks in quickly without leaving a greasy feel for the ladies at work. It uses only coconut oil, water, baking soda and stearic acid or stearine (found in hobby stores with the candle making supplies). It takes maybe 10 minutes to make, costs pennies and makes a nice large batch. If you want the recipe just let me know. It's actually quite suitable for use in hair, too.

And it looks awesome on you!

My hair currently resembles your Nov/Dec 2010 pics. It's been around 1-3 inches long my entire life because every time I try to grow it out, I give up around the 6-7 inch mark when it's still insisting on being an afro and not falling at all. And yet every few years I give it another go. Like, for example, now. Right now I'm up to about 4 inches when pulled straight and I'm determined to power through (stretchy hair bands + puff at the back is definitely a life saver at this stage). I hope mine looks as cute as yours once it's long enough to do anything other than stick straight out!

And thank you. I didn't expect it to grow so much but i've learned a lot and love it.

Yay on you growing it out! One of the main sites I go to is Curlynikki.com and there's a new site called natural sunshine that's kind of like facebook but about natural hair. Sites, board, pics of others really helped me and still do.

Awesome, thanks. I looked at a bunch of sites like those the last time I tried to grow my hair out, but it didn't occur to me to do again now. I'm definitely curious to see how my hair behaves as it gets longer -- is seems like it changes back and forth between hair types at different lengths. I've really only got my sisters' hair to guess by at this point except their hair is a lot finer and less dense than mine. We'll see!

I've always been completely intrigued by the various types of locs, but I suspect that my hair wouldn't hold them. Alas.
