Shut up and Drive 2
Nathan sighed and stopped trying to count to a hundred. He cut off the radio and waited.
Peter said, “I was listening to that.”
Nathan opened a bottle of water and passed the car in front of him. “If I have to listen to one more song about the ‘the black hole in my soul’ I will crash this car and take us both out.” Nathan took a sip of water. “How can you listen to that crap?”
Peter laughed. “I was waiting to see how long it’d take you to snap.” Nathan ignored Peter’s exaggerated look at the nighttime scenery outside. “You plan on stopping anytime soon?”
Nathan turned right, then slowed to let some pedestrians cross the street. “Yes, when I find a hotel.”
“We’ve been passing hotels for five minutes. How about that one?” Peter pointed at a garish motel sign than blinked and pathetically promised ‘Lo rat s.’
Nathan frowned. “Are you serious? They look like they rent by the hour.”
Peter crunched more peanuts and gulped his coke. “Come on, we can pretend I’m your rent boy and you want to tie me down and punish me.”
Nathan narrowed his eyes and looked at his brother.
“Are you drunk?”
Peter stuck out his bottom lip in an exaggerated pout and widened his eyes. Nathan thought he looked like a cartoon character.
“You don’t think I have a promising career as a rent boy? What? Are my clothes not tight enough?”
Nathan noticed the motels were disappearing and the streets looked cleaner. He hoped Peter didn’t bring up the fact that he’d been lost.
“A real rent boy would probably steal the clothes you have on and sell them. Plus, you don’t have that hungry, desperate look in your eyes.”
The silence drew out until Nathan looked over. Peter stared, his mouth open, but nothing coming out until an amazed, “Oh my god. How do you know what a rent boy looks like? I can see your political career right now. You’ll do a good, if bland job then you’ll go down in a gigantic sex scandal involving your harem of rent boys.”
Nathan laughed, but turned it into a cough. “Peter, anybody who was raised in a big city, you know, like New York, knows what a rent boy looks like. And I’m not going to be a politician. I just started working in the D.A.’s office.”
Peter finished his drink and belched. “I notice you didn’t deny the harem thing.”
Nathan grabbed the empty bottle from Peter’s hands. “There better not have been any alcohol in this. What’s all this talk about becoming a rent boy? A lawyer not good enough for you now?”
Peter shifted in his seat and tapped his fingers against his leg. “I’m just thinking about all of my options.”
Nathan grunted and pulled into the Hilton parking lot. So Peter was having doubts about his life being mapped out. Everyone did that. He figured they’d drive for another day and then turn back and go home. He pulled small bag out of the trunk and headed for the lobby. Peter’s voice trailed after him.
“Don’t think I didn’t notice how lost you were earlier. Unless you wanted your little brother to see all those hookers. I thought that one that said she’d ride you like a stallion was pretty. Maybe you should have taken her up on her offer.”
Nathan had never been more tempted to smack his brother. If asked he’d swear his overnight bag hit Peter’s groin by accident. The small ‘hrmphh!’ was like music to his ears.
